Volunteers

Volunteers are a vital part of the Hospice of the Valleys (HOV) team. They bring caring concern, comfort and compassion to patients and families. Volunteers can become sensitive to patients' unique needs and are able to communicate those needs to HOV's staff.

How You Can Help

A variety of volunteer opportunities are available, whether you have limited time to give or have a more flexible schedule. And, if you prefer, volunteer opportunities are available beyond working with patients and families. All volunteers help support the work and purpose of HOV, regardless of their specific duties.

If you are interested in becoming a Hospice of the Valleys volunteer, please contact Erin Obregon, Volunteer Coordinator, at 951-200-7800 or eobregon@hovsc.org.

HOV volunteers may give of their time and talents in a variety of ways, including:

Patient Care and Support

Patient care volunteers provide companionship and emotional support to the patient and family, helping in the home and offering respite to the caregiver. Volunteers also can offer support to grieving families through telephone calls, notes or personal visits, shopping, cooking and cleaning.

By Your Side

For patients living in a facility that have no family or none in the area who are in their final hours. Hospice of the Valleys is committed to ensure that no one on our service dies alone.

Teen Program

Our Teen volunteers visit with patients in facilities or may help in a home per practical request. Teens also make fleece blankets, meditation beads, seasonal cards and other projects for HOV patients.

Memory Bears and Hearts

Memory Bears are available to HOV families of the patients we have served. Memory Bears are made from an article of clothing dear to the patient or family. They come lovingly wrapped in a beautiful crocheted or knitted blanket. Small heart pillows are available if preferred.

Transitions Program

Volunteers play an important role in fulfilling the mission of HOV's Transitions Program. After successfully completing an intensive training program, Transitions volunteers provide companionship, assistance with shopping and errands, and transportation to appointments.

Administrative/Office Support

Volunteers assist in the office by providing help with special projects, mailings and clerical support.

Special Services

Volunteers with expertise in language interpretation, music or other areas may share their specialties with patients and families. Those who are licensed professionals in massage therapy and hair styling, and specialize in pet therapy and music therapy can also give of their talents at HOV.

Speakers' Bureau

HOV representatives are often invited to speak to worship communities, civic groups and other gatherings. Experienced volunteers assist with community education and public speaking.

Special Events

Volunteers help with memorial services, fundraising events, conferences, seminars and other special events.

Training

HOV volunteers must complete a 16-18 hour intensive training program which is held regularly at our office. They gain valuable in-depth knowledge and understanding of the hospice philosophy and concept of care. The entire community is invited to attend our training sessions to gain knowledge about hospice without making a commitment to volunteer. We ask $35.00 if you would like Continuing Education Credits.
